El Charco
del Ingenio

Located a few minutes from San Miguel de Allende, El Charco del Ingenio is an extraordinary Botanical Garden and Nature Reserve. It has an extensive collection of cacti and other succulent plants from Mexico, many of them rare, threatened or in danger of extinction.

Organized civil society since 1991

Our mission is to protect and preserve biocultural heritage, developing an Ethnobotanical Garden dedicated to the conservation and study of regional flora, as well as the construction of an environmental culture in society.


Botanical collection

It is made up of species from the arid and semi-arid zones of Mexico, many of them rare, threatened or in danger of extinction.


Wildlife

The variety of topography and wet conditions offer a diverse and healthy sanctuary for wildlife.


Etnobiología

Con el apoyo del Consejo Nacional de Humanidades, Ciencias y Tecnologías (CONAHCYT) se lleva a cabo la investigación para el rescate de conocimientos sobre el uso de las plantas de la región, revalorando así nuestro patrimonio biocultural .

Last April, within the framework of the anniversary of the Institute of Biology of the National University (UNAM) in Mexico City, representatives of Mexican botanical gardens remembered this extraordinary woman, pioneer of modern Biology. Helia Bravo Hollis (1901-2001) was the first certified Mexican biologist, founder of the UNAM Botanical Garden and the Mexican Society of Cactology, and the first to carry out taxonomic studies of Mexican cacti, which transcend to the present day and beyond our borders.

Newsletter April 2024

Almost 33 years have passed since that morning in July 1991 when the Sun was totally eclipsed by the Moon for several minutes in a wide region of Mexico, including San Miguel de Allende. Those were the days when we were about to inaugurate the Botanical Garden, under the auspices of the civil association Cante, on a hillside of the extraordinary natural and historical monument known as El Charco del Ingenio.
